Entertainment - India;Slumdog dwindles as Raaz gains at charts

Slumdog Millionaire might have been nominated for 10 Oscars but the film has not yet been able to meet the Indian audience's expectations. Despite the hype created by the movie in the past few days, some trade analysts say that the Hindi version has done average business at the box office as compared to its English version. The movie was released in India on January 23, along with Mahesh Bhatt's Raaz.

Industry experts said that so far Raaz has earned nett collections of Rs12.50 crore over the first weekend grossing around Rs 4.75 crore nett on day one itself. The film started with around 75% collections on the first day and was released across 900 theatres pan India and Slumdog Millionaire (in English and Hindi) has grossed about Rs 8 to Rs 9 crore, of which only about 30-35 % collections have come from the Hindi version.

However, according to Fox STAR Studios, the weekend gross box office openings for Slumdog were over Rs 13.5 crores across 351 screens. Joydeep Ghosh Roy, general manager, marketing and sales, PVR Cinemas said, "Raaz and Slumdog (English) experienced occupancy of 50% and 65% respectively. In some tier 2 cities, the Hindi version even had a100% occupancy over the weekend. We ran almost similar number of shows for both the films at our theatres but in other territories Raaz has done better business."

Komal Nahta, film analyst said that Raaz is a well earning film as compared to Slumdog . "The English version of Slumdog did well in big cities, whereas the Hindi version has managed to attract only a few. While Raaz had a good opening and fared well on the first four days of its release, Slumdog Crorepati had a shaky start and was rated as an average movie with collections dropping on the fourth day." Nahta added.

The word of mouth publicity for Slumdog has been positive and the Hindi version of the film has been running to packed houses over the weekend in several markets like Chandigarh, Kanpur, Aurangabad, Jallandhar, Ghaziabad, Surat and Ranchi.

Adding to this, Vijay Singh, CEO Fox Star Studios India mentioned, "As we had expected, for a non star driven film Slumdog has seen a phenomenal pick up from Friday onwards with a weekend jump of over 50% in collections."
